Census Online
Census name indexes are also available online. A census name index is an index of names compiled from the census records. They enable you to search for a person by surname, forename and age.
Indexing census names for large counties like London or Yorkshire is a mammoth task and a huge amount of manpower is required to compile those records.
Smaller UK-based companies, societies and individuals have also
been compiling census name indexes covering particular counties
or areas. Cultural, historical, and geographical knowledge of the
UK and an interest in genealogy give them an advantage in producing
more accurate results than other companies outside of the UK.
To remedy this situation, two major UK-based genealogy supplies companies, S&N Genealogy Supplies and British Data Archive, have been funding a new census name indexing project and making their existing databases available online. Thousands of volunteers from all over the UK have since contributed to this project. S&N are also funding major transcription projects enabling millions of new records to be added to online databases.
Census indexes and transcripts are available for counties across England and Wales — see www.thegenealogist.co.uk for details. |
